The rogan josh of the matriarch, aunty Bibi Brey, would stand up to the best North Indian curries produced anywhere – including those cooked in Delhi and London’s Brick Lane. It is impossible to praise the butter chicken too highly. The meat melts in the mouth. The ghee-laden gravy is delicately spiced. The matar paneer (pea and cheese mélange) would convert the most ardent carnivore to vegetarianism. Rose water lassi provides the perfect beverage. Finish with cardamom kulfi ice cream. Unlike the food, the neighbourhood and the décor are decidedly down market and it’s not the place to impress a snobbish date.
