On arrival guests nibbled on canapés including chorizo and red pepper compote on toasted baguette, and smoked salmon trout, herb and lemon roulade. They then moved inside to discover tables laden with platters of Joostenberg charcuterie, tarte flambée and Mediterranean salad, all served with baskets of freshly baked bread.

Before tucking in, Breedekloof cellar Du Toitskloof was named Best Value Cellar Overall by Mark Norrish of Ultra Liquors, proud sponsor of the Best Value Wine Guide 2010. This is the fourth time that Du Toitskloof has won the title in the nine-year history of the competition, having previously taken the honours in 2002, 2003 and 2005.

This book duly launched, and formalities over, guests relaxed over roast loin and belly of pork with thyme and fennel seed stuffing with potato gratin Dauphinois and ratatouille, followed by dessert: dark chocolate mousse with almond tuille and orange marmalade sauce.
