A glass of wine with Ntando Buthelezi
Twenty-three year old Ntando Buthelezi is the recipient of the inaugural Dombeya Scholarship. She has recently completed an eight week internship working between the vats of Australia, before returning to SA to work at Dombeya Wines.
What was special about being awarded this bursary?
I wanted to learn and I was blessed to be placed in an environment where they wanted to teach.
And how has this affected you personally?
It has made me a more rounded individual, and invigorated my thirst for knowledge - I never want to become complacent.
What has your family's response been?
When I started studying at Stellenbosch, my mother's friends thought I was lying. They said you can't go away four years to make alcohol.
In terms of race, how do you perceive the industry?
The wine industry is receptive to people of colour, I sometimes forget that I am white, I mean black.
Where to next?
My bursary ended in June, so I will be looking for a job.
