A fresh haul
One of the few things that I dislike cooking is fish stock. It’s a smelly business, and in order to make really amazing quality stock one needs a variety of leftover fish skins, bones and shells. So I was thrilled to discover that the newly opened Southern Cross seafood deli and sushi bar at Palmyra Junction stocks freshly made fish stock; roughly R11 for one litre.
It’s super fresh – but one can freeze it. And it’s perfect for autumn dishes such as bouillabaisse.
The shop also stocks freshly made lobster bisque and salmon trout roe. To my delight, seasonal, fresh (never-been-frozen) fish is also available - a rare find, despite living in a coastal city. Frozen items include prawns, langoustines, clams and scallops.
The shop is small, but expect personalised service from the owner (who was able to provide more than adequate advise on our purchase). I’m yet to try the sushi bar’s fare – strangely it’s only open until 7pm. But will be sure to report back when I do.
